Abstract
With increasing international concerns on suicide, the United Nations(UN) and the World Health Organization(WHO) have recommended every government should develop and implement a comprehensive national strategy for suicide prevention. This study analyzed the strategies of New Zealand, the United States, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Australia in comparison with that of Korea. For this purpose, those national strategies were analyzed based on the framework presented by the WHO. The strategies were reviewed and analyzed with regard to the potential components of a suicide prevention strategy; (1) clear objectives; (2) relevant risk and protective factors; (3) effective interventions; (4) improving case registration and conducting research; and (5) monitoring and evaluation. The results show that, while goals and intervention methods were well presented in Korea¡¯s national strategy, inter-organizational collaborations were not clear, analysis of risk and preventive factors was not carried out, and there existed the lack of effectiveness evaluation for prevention strategy. It is suggested that action process and outcome need to be checked, and evaluation plan needs to be implemented to improve and develop the national strategy for suicide prevention.
